After my experimentations with other materials I got inspired and I wanted to try out expanding foam. It seemed as an interesting and quite rare media to use. Since I have never used it before all the experiments were quite rough. I am not worried about that though as the point was just to see how does it expand, how does it dry, how does it react to other materials. These experiments acknowledged me about very basic use of expanding foam.
All the outcomes from this experiment are very weird in a way. They looked even creepy at times. Despite the ugly glossy sticky look I am really interested in all the textures, holes, bubbles and shapes created by this foam. I believe it has quite a lot of potential I just needed to make it more appealing. I was suggested to continue on playing with all the shapes and just pushing all this experimentation forward.
Cutting and sanding
I decided to interveen with the foam structure. I was thinking about all the different processes such as cutting, carving, drilling, piercing and slicing. However, I chose to slice it first and I believe it was rather successful. Once the foam piece is sliced it open up all the texture and structure inside. It allows to experience the object from the inside. It gives more possibilities for experimentation as the shapes change with every slice.
Sanding the foam was quite interesting process as well. Firstly, it allows to get rid of all the glossiness (I really didn't like the glossy look). Whilst sanding, it seems that you are going through layers of the foam. All the holes and bubbles that are inside can be open whilst sanding. Through this process new textures and structures are created. The surface of the foam changes and becomes more interesting and appealing.
