Books

My researched included some books but I forgot to blog about it.

Natural Architecture by Alessandro Rocca

The book has some magnifican pieces that relate to my project.
I have posted some David Nash work in my blog already. At first I didn't know it was his work and I just picked as random inspiration but later I so more and more pieces that relate to my project and natural architecture.

Sylvan steps by David Nash
Auerworld Palace by Sanfte Strukturen

Auerworld Palace by Sanfte Strukturen

Root sculpture by Nils-Udo

Ice Pavilion by Olafur Eliasson

Canopy at the Contemporary Arts Centre Queens, NY
(by n architects)

This book is all about architecture built from natural media. Most of the artists used materials found on site. I find this idea very interesting. This is what encouraged be to walk around the college and pick up some materials such as stones or wood.

I believe this book relates to my work because:
  • it shows how to use natural media
  • it uses media found on site
  • it joins nature and architecture more closely than ever
  • uses unexpected media such as ice or tree roots (I find it inspiring and need to try it out myself)
  • natural shapes and forms
This book is not only very interesting and inspiring but it is almost a guide how man made natural architecture.

Glass House - buildings for open living by Nicky Adams

The whole book is about houses that have very strong connection between interiors and the surrounding area around the house. All the buildings try to open up the indoors spaces to the outside, delete the margins and blend them with nature around. The book has a lot of very nice examples but I chose my personal favorites.

Marcio Kogan Gama-Issa House

Barton Myers House

I believe these pieces of architecture and this book links to my work quite a lot as I was looking how to bring in more nature into architecture. Here the aim is the same but the way to get there is opposite the architectures opens up to the nature. I was also looking at Junya's Ishigami work which talks about opening spaces up to the nature. His primar source of inspiration was Japanese architecture (Katsura palace) and I believe these buildings were inspired buy Japanese inside-outside architecture as well.
